I read and watch a fair amount of content either set in or from the late 19th century and the early 20th and a name I hear time and again in reference to domestic matters is Mrs Beeton.
I knew the basics, in that this Beeton woman published a book or two on household life and the proper way to go about things but my curiosity finally got the better of me and I've been doing a little research.
When I previously pictured Mrs Beeton I thought of an older kindly figure, maybe a little plump in plain but neat clothing. As it turns out Mrs Beeton was 21 when she began work on her most famous of works, Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management and was in fact in her grave by 28.
Not at all what I expected.
I wonder if the many thousands of women who considered her book the bible of domestic duties knew her somewhat tragic story or that she was of such tender years?
