I have many favourite films. One movie that continually creeps up my favourites list is What Ever Happened to Baby Jane (1962).
I adore Bette Davis and will watch almost anything she's in. Most of my favourite films of hers are from the 30s and 40s, when she was arguably in her prime but the 1962 gothic horror, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane is just incredible.
For starters it co-stars Joan Crawford and those two were intense rivals so that just adds a whole other element.
Secondly the character of Baby Jane is utterly insane and we get to see her physically deteriorate throughout the movie as Davis decided that she was the kind of character that wouldn't wash her makeup off each night, instead she would simply layer more on in the morning. I can't even tell you how wonderfully effective this is.
Thirdly this film has one of my favourite endings of all time. The movie just keeps spinning out of control until it reveals it's true self to you, leaving you broken and bewildered.
Honestly. It's that good.
I know some people think it's a little over the top but when you're really watching I think you might find that it surprises you with it's subtlety.
If you haven't seen this, fix it. Watch it. I can't imagine you'd regret it.
