For today's Film Friday, we are talking horror again. I am a horror lover from way back but I definitely have trouble finding films that live up to any kind of expectations.
The Babadook is an Australian horror film from 2014 and it has had a lot of buzz surrounding it since its initial release.
The Babadook tells the story of a dysfunctional parent/child relationship between a widowed mother and her almost seven year old boy.
Towards the beginning of the movie, a mysterious children's book appears in the house, telling the disturbing tale of the Babadook. Things quickly escalate from there...
There were a lot of things to love about this film. From it's smart psychological script, rife with metaphors to the wonderful casting and the timeless set and costume designs, I was on board.
The movie is full of atmosphere and genuine feelings of terror but the thrills very rarely felt cheap.
If you're a horror fan, I would definitely give this one a go but I would suggest keeping an open mind and thinking a little more metaphorically when it comes to the ending.
