Yesterday saw an impromptu showing of Independence Day Resurgence.
I went in with basically no expectations. I'm not huge on Science Fiction in general and it's been well over a decade since I've seen the first film but I actually quite enjoyed myself.
The story takes place exactly 20 years after the first alien invasion and as can be expected, things are bigger, bolder and more dangerous than before.
Most of the original characters are back, with the obvious exception of Captain Hiller (Will Smith), along with a whole host of new ones.
The stakes, as are customary in sequels, have been significantly raised with the whole world now being at risk of extinction, and let me warm you, not too many punches are held with the safety of our core group of characters. There are a handful of deaths, keeping a sense of urgency during the whole affair.
This isn't exactly a new favourite but I ended up enjoying it and am curious to go back and watch the original now to see if my perspective has changed at all.
All of this should be taken with a grain of salt since this isn't my regular movie going fare but if you have a friend that wants to see this, don't be too hasty in turning down the invitation, you might be pleasantly surprised.
