Ever since the extreme success of The Silence of the Lambs in 1991, I feel like there has been a slew of Mystery/Crime/Thrillers trying to be the next best thing and not even coming close. One such movie I would put in this category is the Sandra Bullock film, Murder by Numbers.
I only got around to watching this for the first time, last week and I have to say it was pretty entertaining but the room for improvement was a mile long.
The movie centres around two dysfunctional and disillusioned teenage boys (played by Michael Pitt and Ryan Gosling) who murder a woman, simply to prove their freedom, while Sandra Bullock's character, Detective Mayweather (who has her own brand of dysfunction and disillusionment to contend with), tries to solve the case.
There are a lot of good ideas in this movie and some pretty decent acting but the script and the direction definitely could have used a little tweaking.
If you're a fan of the Crime/Thriller genre I wouldn't dissuade you from watching this but I would suggest you keep your expectations on the reasonable end of the spectrum. Good but not great.
