Yesterday I watched the 1985 television mini series adaptation of Anne of Green Gables, and I'm not really sure where to begin with this one.
I read Anne for the first time last November and loved every minute I spent with that sweet red haired, orphan girl.
As soon as people were aware that I enjoyed the book, this was the adaptation that was overwhelmingly recommended to me, so when my friend Renee (a life long Anne devotee) lent it to me, I was happy to watch it.
To me, this adaptation was just okay. It was relatively accurate to the book, it kept all the important narrative elements. The look of it was fine. The casting seemed pretty good. No obvious blunders.
Something about it just wasn't quite right for me though. The cast, while being proficient weren't, any of them, how I imagined while reading the book. The tone, while nice enough, didn't capture the same magical childhood wonderment that the book overflowed with. In the end, I simply wasn't satisfied.
It's the kind of thing that I imagine I would have adored, had I grown up with it and the Anne books in general but for me, right now, it didn't quite gel.
I enjoyed it fine but it's definitely not my definitive Anne adaption; although, I have heard rumblings of a new adaptation being made soon so I will stay hopeful that it meets my expectations alittle better.
How about you? Are you a fan of the 1985 mini series? I know a lot of people are. When did you first watch it and what about it makes for your perfect Anne adaptation? I'd love to know.
